The shape of the organ was not officially examined and correctly anatomically mapped until 1998. It was only until 2021 that the clitoris was finally depicted correctly in biology textbooks. Teaching scholars for example that the clitoris is bigger than most of them might think. Did you know it has an average of 10 centimeters?
Unfortunately this improvement doesn't mean we now know the shape and size of the organ collectively. So my question remained, how many people actually do know what the clitoris looks like at this moment?
For the What The Cl*t?! drawings I have asked both friends and complete strangers to draw what they think the clitoris in its basic shape looks like. Asking people between the ages of 18 and 72 and including people of multiple genders and from both urban and rural backgrounds. What The Cl*t?! is an overview of 170 drawings made by 170 individuals.
Disclaimer: This field-study is perhaps showing a minor accuracy distortion in comparison to how many people know the shape in general. I realise that most of the accurate clitorises drawn in this research happen to be drawn by people from my own inner circle, who already knew the shape because of previous conversations with me.
Artist statement
Ik ben geïnteresseerd in ethische kwesties rond de thema's beeldcultuur, identiteit en seksualiteit. Door ongemakken te doorbreken en het onbekende in vraag te stellen, wil ik waarheden aan de oppervlakte brengen. Het is belangrijk voor mij - als ontwerper - om vragen te stellen over de vanzelfsprekendheid van media en beeldcultuur. Door het maken van fotografisch werk, publicaties en illustraties zet ik mezelf in mijn kracht en draag ik bij aan nieuwe vormen van representatie.
Ambities
Na deze studie wil ik als freelancer aan de slag en door gaan met Collectief Halfnaakt waar ik momenteel al in zit. Mogelijk wil ik over een paar jaar nog een design master volgen.
Geleerd tijdens de studie
Als ontwerper heb ik de tools in handen om een bepaald licht op een onderwerp te schijnen. Door deze tools in te zetten kan ik anderen meenemen ergens anders naar te kijken.
