Risen from the obsession and the fear of getting lost. Meanwhile, it reflects on the positive experience of wandering around. Is it possible to unite this contradiction into a distinctive design? Whereas getting leads to a renewed vision, experience and perspective.
Inspired by artists Guy Debord “The society of the spectacle” and Laure Prouvost’s “De-Learning”. Based on modern life in the city by poet Charles Baudelaire. Experimented with cartographer Jacques Bertin’s method of visualising data.
Artist statement
Juul van der Zandt is a graphic designer with a focus on research and printed matter, based in Utrecht. Her aim is to develop critical design from a human centered perspective and create meaningful stories together with others. She’s questioning social contradictions and translate it to no-nonsense design.
Ambitions
In five years' time, I hope to share social stories as a designer. To inspire both art and non-art lovers, and to invest the government in the cultural sector. With a degree from the art academy and a master's degree in social science, I combine artistic and scientific research, and translate it into a publication in the non-profit sector.
My basis is in the Netherlands, and because of my interest in different cultures, I mainly work on global issues from abroad. I hope to combine graphic design with my interest in other countries in a similar way.
Learned during the studies
The most important thing I learned during the graphic design course is perseverance and flexibility. Daring to choose your own path and thinking beyond the (safe) boundaries of a study programme. Because of the pandemic, my exchange with the Weißensee Academy of Art Berlin was cancelled, which kept me curious about studying abroad. When there was the possibility to schedule my own classes for two months, I chose to do research in Berlin on my own initiative.
