How can we as designers anticipate the effects of design? And how do we actively make room for a conversation about this role? For this, we need a critical and ethical attitude. It is about thinking deeply about why and how designers create. By exploring the potential of iron oxide, Iron Objects gives new value to a residual flow.

Iron oxide is a residual flow from the Dutch tap water. 60% of our tap water is groundwater and before it becomes tap water it undergoes an intensive process in which iron oxide, among other things, is filtered out.

By exploring the potential of the material, Iron Objects gives new value to this residual flow. Researching the functionality of the material, has led to work with plaster. Plaster is a natural product that requires little processing, only water. By making plaster with iron water, and coloring it with dried iron sludge, you give both components a function. And the interesting thing about bringing these materials together; it maintains strength and has a large variety of colors.

Artist statement

In mijn werk focus ik op sociale vraagstukken rondom de thema’s identiteit en seksualiteit en hou ik me bezig met duurzaamheid binnen ontwerp. Met een kritische blik visualiseer ik een nieuw perspectief op deze thema’s. Dit doe ik door middel van vorm en materiaal onderzoek en zoek ik de grens op tussen ruimtelijk en grafisch ontwerp.

In my work, I focus on social issues around the themes identity and sexuality. Besides that I am interested in sustainability within design. With a critical view, I visualize a new perspective on these themes. I do this by research in form and material and I explore the boundary between spatial and graphic design.

Ambities

Over een aantal jaar hoop ik een studio te hebben waar ik in samenwerking onderzoek doe naar reststromen en deze omzet in waardevolle producten of objecten. Daarnaast werk ik in een collectief genaamd HALFNAAKT waarmee we beeldend werk maken rondom de thema's identiteit en seksualiteit.

In a few years I hope to have my own studio where I do collaborative research on waste materials and turn them into valuable products or objects. I also work in a collective called HALFNAAKT where we make visual work around the themes of identity and sexuality.

Geleerd tijdens de studie

Het belangrijkste dat ik heb geleerd tijdens mijn studie is dat je door het creëren van een visuele taal, je andere mensen kan inspireren om kritisch te kijken naar hun eigen dagelijkse taferelen.

The most important thing I learned during my studie, is that by creating a visual language, you can inspire other people to look critically at their own daily scenes.
